It’s not bad enough that Naira Marley hasn’t had a hit in a year, now he wants to drop an album.
You don’t need to be a prophet to know that there’s a high tendency the project is going to flop. Just like all the singles he’s been putting out for months now.
The thing is, Naira Marley used to be a sensation. But it’s been a long time since 2019. A global pandemic, two Headies Awards, and two Burna Boy albums after, Naira Marley can’t expect to just put something out and have it bang without any effort. Especially since he has been dropping the same kind of stuff for a long time now.
Last year when he tried something different on “Coming,” he did have a hit. But since then he has struggled to make another hit, releasing a handful of songs before 2021 went to a close. Knowing Naira Marley, he will keep trying his luck. But that doesn’t mean anything. If you’re going to make hits at a time when we have no shortage of quality hits from youngins like Asake, Fireboy, and Rema, you’re going to have to try harder. You can’t just get a weak beat and sing a freestyle and expect the streets to eat it up.
It looks like Naira Marley doesn’t exactly care either. Because he keeps dropping weak songs and the worse part is, they all have the same problems; no effort whatsoever. From “Drug Test” to “Kojosese” to “First Time In America,” it’s all very weak.
Now he has released a new single with Zinoleesky. And honestly, this might be the worst thing Zino has been on in a while. Alongside that, he has announced that he’s coming with an album, and that’s it. We’re supposed to be getting a new Naira Marley album now. We’re supposed to be getting his debut album now.
In 2019, when he did “Lord of Lamba,” the EP which had hits like “Tesumole,” “Mafo,” and “Tingasa,” one would have thought when he finally releases his first album, it’s going to be a classic. Now, everything’s looking gloomy and for someone who hasn’t a had a good song in one year, how can we trust him to come up with a good project?
On a scale of 1-10, I’d say the chances of Naira Marley‘s album being a huge flop is like 7. It’ll take a miracle for him to pull off anything impressive. And that’s too bad. Because he used to be promising.
